Use the interactive depth map below to view your live location on Geneva Lake. If your location appears in the blue zone, you are in water at least 30 feet deep and generally more than 500 feet from shore. We appreciate your help in reducing shoreline erosion, protecting habitat, and improving safety for other lake users.

Recommendation on Wake-Enhanced Sports on Geneva Lake for Ecological Protection
Date: March 2026
Geneva Lake is one of the few Wisconsin lakes with areas deep enough to accommodate large wake & wave recreation when operated responsibly. Operating in deeper water and farther from shore helps reduce impacts to shorelines, habitat, water clarity, and other lake users.

Purpose of Recommending Deeper Water for Enhanced Wake & Wave Action: This recommendation outlines the growing ecological concerns surrounding wake and wave-enhanced boats on Wisconsin’s inland lakes and asks boaters in Geneva Lake to follow the recommended depths to help preserve shoreline integrity, water quality, and public safety.
Background: Wake surfing, wakeboarding, and large boats are growing recreational activities that many enjoy on Geneva Lake. Boats designed to create larger surf, or cause larger waves (often 22 feet or larger), for activities such as wake surfing, wakeboarding, or general recreation have an impact on the lake. Boats that use ballast tanks, hydrofoils, or trim tabs that push the hull deeper into the water have more impact on the lakebed.
These wakes:
-
Accelerate shoreline erosion, even hundreds of feet from shore
-
Disrupt aquatic vegetation, fish spawning areas, and benthic habitat
-
Resuspend nutrient-rich sediments, contributing to harmful algae blooms
-
Pose safety concerns to kayakers, paddleboarders, swimmers, and small watercraft
-
Spread aquatic invasive species through unemptied and unsanitized ballast systems
Lakes Around the State are:
-
banning wake-enhancing equipment
-
passing advisory resolutions recommending shoreline setbacks (500–700 feet) and depth minimums (30 feet).
-
prohibiting the use of equipment to enhance wakes and operate boat in artificially bow-high manner
-
prohibiting wake surfing (riding wake without rope connection to boat).
-
Ten other lakes within Waukesha, Racine, and Washington County are working on recommendations.

GLEA is NOT banning or prohibiting we are recommending in partnership with the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (SEWRPC), as well as asking for help from boaters on Geneva Lake to observe the following:
Wake-enhanced and surf boating shall occur no closer than 500 feet from shore and only in areas where the lake is at least 30 feet deep.
This recommendation helps:
-
Preserve Geneva Lake’s ecological health
-
Reduce shoreline erosion
-
Limit nutrient disturbance and algae risk
-
Improve safety for non-motorized users and swimmers
